Recent Socio-economic Developments In Nigeria

The present administration in Nigeria has recorded a few achievements which are really commendable. The government of the day has put in some laudable efforts aimed at alleviating the sufferings and bettering the lots of the citizens of the country often called the giant of Africa.

One of the achievements recorded by the government is in the area of telecommunication. The masses in the country now enjoy mobile telecommunication. There is hardly any Nigerian household that you will not see someone that uses a cell phone. The buying of a cell phone is now similar to the buying of any other essential commodity such as milk, sugar, clothes, and so on.

There are many telecommunication companies in the country which has destroyed the power of monopoly in the telecommunication industry formerly enjoyed by the nation's telecommunication outfit known as Nigerian Telecommunication Limited (NITEL). Now, there is maximum competition in the telecommunication industry which has considerably reduced the tariff charged by the telecommunication operators, which is NITEL, before the emergence of other telecommunication giants such as MTN, Globacom, Econet, and so on.

Another laudable achievement is the exportation of cassava to various countries of the world which is bringing in more revenue into the nation's treasury. Nigeria had been depending on crude oil as its sole source of national income. But recently, the government decided to break away from the traditional means of making money.

Oil and gas sector of the national economy was not left out in the cold. The government carved out a ministry known as the Ministry of Solid Minerals which is meant to oversee the oil and gas sector of the national economy. The country makes huge amount of money from the sector. This is a huge achievement which has shifted the interest of the government in particular and the nation at large from crude oil to solid minerals in general.
