Wedding day is filled with traditions which had been practicing around for hundreds and hundreds of years even though the brides would not be realizing it. One among them but the first is that on their wedding day bride and groom would not be meeting until the marriage ceremony is over. For that, the reason is even the glimpse of each other would be bringing bad luck.
Traditionally a bride over her face will wear a veil and will be also wearing a white dress which shows her purity. For preventing the singling of Devil on the bride for his evil intentions, in the past the veils were wore by the bridesmaids also. It is quite common to wear something old (acts as a reminder of her past life)for a bride, something new (showing a new life coming ahead) and also something that is blue which is a color that had been connected with weddings since the time of Roman.
For several years a wedding bouquet was popular with a slim spray of lilies. They are now once again back in fashion even though the designs were changed in near time. Lilies are purity symbols as they are white. It is also said after Eve was banned from the Eden Garden they have grown from wet soil by the tears of Eve. To the bridegroom who is waiting, the bride is handed over by her father at the wedding ceremony. With ancient traditions this custom is followed. The bride will be passed over to the bridegroom for his safekeeping as she had been the property of her father. It is a symbol of her home leaving and her feet will be now on her husband's hearth, the shoes will be tied on the back of the bridal car.
When the time comes for placing the ring on the finger of bride, the bridegrooms will be slipping the ring on to her third finger while she holds her left hand forward. Into the heart a vein of this finger is said to have a straight run! Traditionally guests will be showering with rice or confetti, or flower petals when the couples leave the church. This custom of rice throwing at weddings goes back to times of Roman. The rice is always fertility associated as it is a crop that grows quickly. Over the heads of newly wed the Romans will be breaking small cakes.
Outside the church sometimes the chimney sweeps are seen mingling with the guests. As it gives the bride a black cat cardboard cut-out, they are also connected with good luck bringing. Yet another good luck symbol is the artificial horseshoes. To counteract the Devil's evil eye, on the house walls the Romans used to nail horseshoes.
Often the bride will be throwing her bouquet to her bridesmaids before she leave her wedding party, and it hopes that one who catches it will be becoming the next bride. It is a custom of the bridegroom to carry the bride over to the threshold of new life when she arrives at her new home. Later of that particular day, they will be having what is called ‘the first night'. It means the first night in which they have slept together.
